Strategies to improve traffic efficiency

A group at IIT Madras has studied Indian traffic conditions and come up with three counter-intuitive strategies to improve efficiency of oversaturated traffic flow through road intersections.

The strategies:

  1. Keeping the duration of green signals short enough that the headway reaches a saturation value
  2. To have bottleneck metering along the lines of traffic control on expressways, near entry points and exits.
  3. Two-wheeler throughput can be increased significantly by providing them space upfront at a signalized intersection without affecting other vehicles significantly,

The plastic road technology

The plastic road technology it came as an answer to the nagging problem of waste plastic disposal.

Highlights:

  • One tonne of plastic waste is used with nine tonnes of bitumen to lay 1 km of road. This means a saving of one tonne of bitumen (approximate cost Rs. 50,000).
  • The only unusable plastics are polyvinyl chloride, which releases harmful dioxins when heated up.
  • A performance appraisal by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) showed that plastic roads did not develop familiar defects: potholes, rutting, ravelling or edge flaw.
  • The Roads Ministry “encourages” the use of waste plastic in National Highways construction, especially on National Highways within a 50 km periphery of urban areas that have a population of 5 lakh or more.

Benefits:

  • Usage of plastic waste
  • Longer durability of roads
  • Reducing wear and tear.
  • Saves costs
  • Effective use of plastic waste
  • Reduces environmental burden of plastic

Open Transit Data platform

The transport department of the Delhi government has launched the Open Transit Data platform which provides real-time datasets free of cost to increase transparency and build transport solutions.

Key Facts:

  • It  aims to provide real-time data which can be used by third party app developers and researchers.
  • This includes geo-coordinates of all bus stops, route maps, timetables as well as the real time GPS feeds of bus locations which will be updated every 10 seconds.
  • The portal was designed and developed by IIIT Delhi on behalf of the Delhi government.
  • It will promote collaboration and co-creation of innovative and inclusive transport solutions for the people of Delhi.
  • It will provide a lot of useful information at the fingertips of citizens and encourage more and more people to switch to public transport, thereby impacting pollution.
