Topic 1:Industrial development

The Zojila Tunnel

Prime Minister on Saturday inaugurated the Zojila tunnel project, which will provide all-weather connectivity to Srinagar, Kargil and Leh.


  • The tunnel will cut down the time taken to cross the Zojila pass from the three hours 30 minutes to 15 minutes.
  • The tunnel will have a transverse ventilation system, uninterrupted power supply, emergency lighting, CCTV monitoring, pedestrian cross passages at every 250 metres and emergency telephones and fire-fighting cabinets at every 125 metres.
  • At 14.15 km, it will be the country’s longest road tunnel.

Flying taxis

Uber had promised us a flying taxi service by 2023


  • It unveiled prototypes for a “flying car”  what it calls an electric vertical take-off and landing vehicle (eVTOL)  at its annual Elevate summit
  • The concept eVTOL is a cylindrical body which can house four passengers plus the pilot, and resembles a contraption that’s the jugaad of a drone, plane, and helicopter.
  • It has supports  which look like a conventional aircraft’s wings which house the battery packs, and two rotors stacked upon each other, on either side.
  • The tail has a single forward-facing propeller to power and support horizontal aerial movement.
  • Each ’craft is designed to fly between altitudes of 1,000 and 2,000 feet, and Uber also envisions rooftop landing and take-off pods, dubbed Uber Skyports, which will be theoretically equipped to handle almost 200 landings and take-offs every hour.

Green Good Deeds Movement

Green Good Deeds, the societal movement launched by the Union Minister for Environment, Forest & Climate Change to protect environment and promote good living in the country, has found acceptance by the global community


  • The campaign has been launched by the Environment Ministry to sensitise the people and students, in particular, about climate change and global warming.
  • The objective of the campaign is to restore and return the clean and green environment to the next generation.
  • The Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change had drawn up a list of over 500 Green Good Deeds and asked people to alter their behaviour to Green Good Behaviour to fulfil their Green Social Responsibility.
  • These small, positive actions, to be performed by individuals or organisations to strengthen the cause of environmental protection have been put up on a mobile App named “Dr Harsh Vardhan”.

Swachh Survekshan 2018

The Swachh Survekshan 2018 results have been announced. It was organized by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), under the aegis of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban), assessed 4203 Urban Local Bodies.


  • The on-field survey for Swachh Survekshan was conducted by an independent agency and the data for ranking of the cities collected from 3 sources:
  1. Service Level Progress: To verify whether systems and processes are in place in Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) to implement Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) in the most efficient way.
  2. Direct Observation: To verify and assess general cleanliness in the cities by making random field visits in different parts of the city and public conveniences (Community/Public Toilets).
  3. Citizens Feedback: To collect feedback directly from citizens and monitor the performance of Swachhata App, a citizens grievance Mobile App.

Performance of various cities:

  • Indore has emerged as the cleanest city, followed by Bhopal and Chandigarh
  • Jharkhand has been adjudged as the best performing state, followed by Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh.
  • Cleanest State Capital/UT: Greater Mumbai.
  • India’s ‘Cleanest big City’: Vijaywada (Andhra Pradesh).
  • Cleanest State Capital/UT: Greater Mumbai.

Rising CFC levels

Scientists have discovered an unexplained and unexpected rise in levels of CFC-11, one of the most damaging of all chlorofluorocarbons (CFC).


  • CFCs were banned as part of the 1987 Montreal Protocol, and levels were seen to be declining as a result
  • The source of this increase broadly to East Asia, but have said that a more accurate and specific location would require further investigation.

About Montreal Protocol

  • The Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer (a protocol to the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer) is an international treaty designed to protect the ozone layer by phasing out the production of numerous substances that are responsible for ozone depletion.
  • It was agreed on 16 September 1987, and entered into force on 1 January 1989

Kishanganga Hydropower Station

Kishanganga hydropower project will provide 13% free power to Jammu and Kashmir including 1% for local area development fund.


  • The projects  given the strategic importance of the 330 megawatt (MW) project on the river Kishanganga, a tributary of Jhelum.
  • Pakistan had challenged the project under the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960, the International Court of Arbitration at The Hague ruled in India’s favour in 2013.
  • The Jhelum originates in India and flows into Pakistan, and according to the Indus Water Treaty, whoever builds the project first will have the first rights on the river water.

Topic 4: The Key Initiatives of Government


  • e-Rashtriya Kisan Agri Mandi (E-RaKAM) is a digital platform portal enables farmers to sell their agricultural products through auction.
  • Various E-Rakam centers are being developed to facilitate farmers for online sale their products across the country
  • The farmers would get the payment for their products directly into their bank accounts without any intermediaries
  • CWRC, a subsidiary of the Central Warehousing Corporation Ltd, will provide logistics support for sellers and buyers in case they need it.


  • Ministry of Communication launched ―DARPAN – Digital Advancement of Rural Post Office for A New India.
  • The project aimed at realizing financial inclusion of un-banked rural population.
  • It is IT modernization project which intends to provide a low power technology solution to each branch postmaster to improve service delivery.
  • DARPAN offers core banking services such as cash deposit and withdrawal in savings bank and recurring deposit, mini statement, Aadhaar seeding and daily transaction report.
  • The application will also be used for the reimbursement of social security benefits such as MNREGS, old age pension and DBT.
  • It is targeted to complete the project by March 2018.

Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA)

SSA – It is aimed at the universalisation of elementary education as mandated by the 86th Amendment to the Constitution of India which made free and compulsory education to children between the ages of 6 to 14 as a fundamental right

Initiatives and Sub-Programmes under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA)

  • Shagun Portal – It has two components i.e Repository of best practices to learn from success stories & Online Monitoring of the SSA implemented by States and UTs
  • Padhe Bharat Badhe Bharat – To improve the reading and writing skills of children in classes I and II, along with their mathematics skills
  • Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan (RAA) – It aims to motivate and engage children of the age group of 6-18 years, in Science, Mathematics and Technology by Institutions of  Higher Education like IIT’s, IISER’s and NIT’s.
  • Vidyanjali – To enhance community and private sector involvement in Government run elementary schools across the country.
