National Health Profile-2018

Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare released the National Health Profile (NHP)-2018 prepared by the Central Bureau of Health Intelligence (CBHI).

National Health Profile

The National Health Profile covers demographic, socio-economic, health status and health finance indicators, along with comprehensive information on health infrastructure and human resources in health.


  • The national health indicators like Infant Mortality Rate (IMR), Maternal Maternity Rate (MMR) and Total Fertility Rate (TFR) are declining faster a than the world pace.

The Ayushman Bharat Scheme

  • The Ayushman Bharat will provide comprehensive healthcare to the people
  • The Health and Wellness Centres (H&WC) would provide preventive, promotive, and curative care for non-communicable diseases, dental, mental, geriatric care, palliative care, etc.
  • The Government has initiated universal screening of common NCDs (Non Communicable Diseases) such as diabetes, hypertension and common cancer.

The National Health Resource Repository(NHRR)

Country’s first ever national healthcare facility registry of authentic, standardized and updated geo-spatial data of all public and private healthcare establishments.


  • To strengthen evidence-based decision making and develop a platform for citizen and provider-centric services.
  • It will be the ultimate platform for comprehensive information of both, Private and Public healthcare establishments
  • It shall also enhance the coordination between central and state government for optimization of health resources

National Strategy for Standardization

The 5th National Standards Conclave – Implementing the Indian National Strategy for Standardization, being held in New Delhi. Indian National Strategy for Standardization (INSS) reports were released at the event.

Key Facts:

  • INSS is the result of the combined efforts of Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Ministry of Consumer Affairs and industry stakeholders.
  • It provides a vision for the country to achieve the highest quality standards in production and distribution of goods and services in an attempt to reclaim Brand India.
  • The INSS report addresses four broad pillars of Quality Ecosystem:

    (i) Standards Development

    (ii) Conformity Assessment and Accreditation

    (iii) Technical Regulations and SPS Measures

    (iv) Awareness and Education.

Topic 2 : Energy

National targets for off-shore wind power

The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy recently invited Expressions of Interest (EoI) for the first 1 GW offshore wind project in India.


  • The Ministry has declared medium and long term target for off-shore wind power capacity additions, which are 5 GW by 2022 and 30 GW by 2030.
  • The offshore wind turbines are of much larger dimensions and capacities than onshore turbines.
  • The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy had notified National Off-Shore Wind Policy in October 2015 to realize the offshore wind power potential in the country.
  • Globally there has been installation of about 17 to 18 GW of off-shore wind power led by countries such as UK, Germany, Denmark, Netherlands & China.

National Digital Library of India

The Union Human Resource Development Minister launched the new digital initiative of HRD Ministry ‘National Digital Library of India’ on the occasion of National Reading Day.


  • Under the aegis of National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT).
  • The objective of NDL is to make digital educational resources available to all citizens of the country.
  • National Digital Library of India is developed by IIT Kharagpur.
  • NDL is the Single Window Platform that collects and collates metadata from premier learning institutions in India and abroad, as well as other relevant sources.
  • It is a digital repository containing textbooks, articles, videos, audio books, lectures, simulations, fiction and all other kinds of learning media.
  • It  is a 24×7 ubiquitous knowledge resource that is accessible to anyone with internet access and it is built to enable the rise of Digital India.
  • Apart from website, NDL is also available on the Mobile app.

Social media communication hub

The Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry has planned to set up a ‘Social Media Communication Hub’ that would help it keep a tab on trending news in districts and gather feedback on the Centre’s flagship schemes.

  • Under the project, media persons would be employed on contractual basis in each district.
  • They would also take the people’s feedback on the government’s policies and follow the news trending in their areas.
  • Experts would also be employed at the central level to analyse the feedback.
  • The Broadcast Engineering Consultants India Limited (BECIL), a Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) under the ministry, had floated a tender to supply a software for the project.

Topic 4: The Key Initiatives of Government

Nai Manzil

  • It aims to engage constructively with Poor Minority youth and help them obtain sustainable and gainful employment opportunities.
  • In the age group of 17 to 35 years who are school dropouts or educated in the community education institutions are eligible.
  • Integrated Skill Training is being provided in market driven skills.
  • The other objectives include, raise awareness and sensitization in health and life skills, formal education and certification upto level 8th or 10th through National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) or other State open schooling systems.
  • It was launched for the first time in J&K in 2016.


  • Transparency, Auction Monitoring and Resource Augementation (TAMRA) is a web portal and mobile application, to streamline the process of various statutory clearances required for mining operations.
  • It will display block-wise, state-wise and mineral-wise information of the blocks to be auctioned.

Panchayat Empowerment and Accountability Incentive Scheme:

  • It is a central sector scheme aimed at incentivization of States  for devolving funds, functions and functionaries (3Fs) to Panchayats
  • Aims incentivization of Panchayats to put in place accountability systems to make their functioning transparent and efficient.   
  • The scheme is 100% centrally funded.
  • State Governments/UTs are ranked on a Devolution Index which measures the extent of devolution of 3Fs by States to Panchayats.
  • Based on the index, the best performing states and panchayats have been incentivized since 2011.
