Asia Pacific Trade Agreement

The Centre has implemented the tariff concessions agreed to under the Asia Pacific Trade Agreement.

  • The Asia-Pacific Trade Agreement  (APTA), previously known as the Bangkok Agreement
  • APTA is a preferential trade agreement, under which there will be a basket of items for tariff concessions.
  • The basket and the extent of tariff concessions are enlarged during the trade negotiating rounds that are conducted periodically.
  • Its aim is to promote economic development and cooperation through the adoption of trade liberalization measures
  • The member countries are India,Bangladesh, China,Republic of Korea,Lao, SriLanka and Magnolia

Self-help employment societies (SHES)

Self-help employment societies (SHES) have become active in the high ranges with the block panchayats taking the initiative to mechanise the farm sector in Kerala state.

Highlights:

  • The block panchayats distribute farm machinery and equipment to the SHES whose members were trained in their operation.
  • The SHES members will offer their services to farmers at nominal rates.
  • Aimed at strengthening the agriculture sector
  • Ensuring job opportunities
  • Mechanisation in farm sector
  • Regular income is ensured to SHES members

Kudumbasree’s helping hand to the refugees

  • The Kudumbasree will provide skill development training to the Rohingya refugees and help them market their products
  • Kudumbasree is sending a package of health safety equipments for those who were working as scavengers in the medical camps.

Kudumbasree:

  • Kudumbashree is the poverty eradication and women empowerment programme implemented by the State Poverty Eradication Mission (SPEM) of the Government of Kerala.
  • Kudumbashree has a three-tier structure
  1. Neighbourhood Groups (NHGs) at the lowest level
  2. Area Development Societies (ADS) at the middle level and
  3. Community Development Societies (CDS) at the local government level.
  • The community network is formed around the central themes of poverty eradication and women empowerment, its main features include democratic leadership, and support structures.

e-waste collection

The Kerala State government launched programme to clean electronic waste (e-waste) from government offices.

Highlights:

  • Electronic equipment that have been categorised as old by the electronics wing of the Public Works Department are being removed as part of the drive
  • The segregation is done as the plastic and metal parts are recycled separately
  • The gold plating on the CPU boards is segregated, to be reused later for electroplating purposes.
  • A nodal officer has been appointed at all government offices to ensure the observance of green protocol.

Electroplating:

  • Electroplating is the process of plating one metal onto another by hydrolysis, most commonly for decorative purposes or to prevent corrosion of a metal.
  • There are also specific types of electroplating such as copper plating, silver plating, and chromium plating

MOVE: Global Mobility Summit

NITI Aaayog, in collaboration with various ministries and industry partners, is organising ‘MOVE: Global Mobility Summit’ in New Delhi on 7th and 8th September, 2018.

Highlights:

  • It will be the first Global Mobility Summit of its kind.
  • The summit will help drive Government’s goals for vehicle electrification,  renewable energy integration and job growth and also speed up India’s transition to a clean energy economy.
  • It aims to bring together and engage with key stakeholders and to evolve a public interest for a shared, connected, zero emission and inclusive mobility agenda for the future
  • The six tracks or themes for the Summit will focus on:
  1. Asset Utilization and Services
  2. Comprehensive Electrification
  3. Alternative Energy

cVigil app

The Election Commission launched an Android-based mobile application named “cVigil” for citizens

Highlights:

  • To share proof of malpractices by political parties, their candidates and activists when the Model Code of Conduct is in force.
  • The mobile application facilitates sharing of geo-tagged photographic and video evidence without disclosing the identity of the sender.
  • The uploaded information will be transmitted to the control room, and other respective teams for further action.
  • In case the complainant does not opt for anonymity, the person will also receive an action-taken report within about 100 minutes
  • EC also launched a voter education and electoral participation portal.

The Election Commission:

  • It  is an autonomous constitutional authority responsible for administering election processes in India.
  • The body administers elections to the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, state Legislative Assemblies in India, and the offices of the President and Vice President in the country

e-marketing system

The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) launched its, in-house developed,single-umbrella e-marketing system named Khadi Institution Management and Information System (KIMIS).

Highlights:

  • The system can be accessed from anywhere in the country for the sale and purchase of Khadi and Village Industries products.
  • The software will give real-time data of sales and will also give the updated status of stocks of khadi bhawans and godowns
  • Better planning and control of inventory of the KVIC.
  • It will be useful in raising demand and supply of goods in high demand.

Topic 4: The Key Initiatives of Government

INAM PRO

  • It is a web-based application for Infrastructure and Material Providers
  • It brings together the material providers and the prospective buyers engaged in executing central/state funded roads and highways and bridge construction projects in a common platform.
  • Given the success of INAM-PRO with cement, other materials like steel and steel slag have also been brought on this platform so as to make this as a comprehensive e-market place for infrastructure providers.

Aajeevika Grameen Express Yojana

  • It is a new sub-scheme under Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAYNRLM).
  • Its main objective is to provide an alternative source of livelihood to members of Self Help Groups (SHGs) and facilitate them to operate public transport services in backward rural areas.
  • It will provide safe, affordable and community monitored rural transport to connect remote villages with key services and amenities.  
  • It will be implemented in 250 blocks in the country on a pilot basis for a period of 3 years from 2017-18 to 2019-20
  • Under this scheme, Community Based Organisation (CBO) will provide interest free loan from its own corpus to the Self Help Group members for purchase of vehicles
